English (ENGA) is a non-lab based, language, offered as a honours subject in Day shift under the BACHELOR OF ARTS Course in our college.
The English Department of Dum Dum Motijheel College (Science) has stood out as one of the most student-friendly and prestigious departments of the college since its inception in 1950. The Department has five full time teachers and three State Aided College Teachers. All the teachers have good academic excellence, and also have potential to operate modern teaching methods to meet with a successful learning process.
The Department has total 84 seats for the Honours students and 35 for the General. The Department, till date, has produced many eminent students who have established themselves in various public and private sectors across the world. Apart from the regular honours and general elective courses in English, the department organises seminars, conferences, special talks, exhibitions, debates at different times of the years. As per UGC recommendations, the English Dept of Dum Dum Motijheel College follows the CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) and its course design. The dept offers the following courses:
a) B.A. Honours (Semester 1-6)
b) General Elective (Semester 1-6)
c) Compulsory English (Semester 1 and 2)
d) Alternative English (Semester 3 and 4)
e) AECC, MIL English (Semester 2)
f) Skill Development (Sem 3 and 4 for Hons, and Sem 3-6 for General)
About the future prospect :
English is one of the most coveted subjects at UG level in terms of employment. A student can aspire a broad area of employment through different types of courses. An honours student of English can proceed to post graduation and further research after the completion of UG. Similarly, the general courses of English enable a student to get ready for different competitive exams and interviews.

As part of CBCS curriculum, the English Department of Dum Dum Motijheel College, has Incorporated Skill Development programmes, Communicative and alternative English programmes in its daily routine. The Department gives ample facilities to NCC cadets, sports geniuses and also the young talented artists and actors throughout the year.
The Department also enthusiastically organises excursions each year for an open knowledge of art, literature and music.The Post Graduate unit of the English Department at Dum Dum Road also gives scope to 35 students each year for higher studies. Many students, passed out from this unit, have successfully secured SET/NET for college services.
About books and the library
Students of English literature have to be friendly with national and international journals, books and other research publications. The teachers, therefore, guide their students properly on how to use libraries and database available there. It is noteworthy that our college library provides a good resource of books and database to the students.
Students cherish the golden moments of their Nabin Baron (Freshers Welcome ) as well as love to perpetuate their memories at the Farewell Ceremony each year.
The most precious part of the English department of Dum Dum Motijheel College is the teacher - student relationship which is based on understanding, respect, cooperation and team spirit.
